CNN receives 14 news and documentary Emmy noms

CNN has received 14 news and documentary Emmy nominations (in addition to the five nominations between The Sixties and Parts Unknown).

CNN was nominated for an Emmy for Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast during The Situation Room, for CNN’s coverage of the rescue from Mount Sinjar, anchored by Wolf Blitzer, with reporting from correspondents Elise Labott, Barbara Starr, and Ivan Watson.

For the network’s investigation of the crisis at the VA, they were nominated for Outstanding Investigative Journalism in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast during AC360, reported by senior investigation correspondent Drew Griffin, and their theme park investigation, by correspondent Kyra Phillips.

They received another Emmy nomination for Poppy Harlow’s reporting during AC360 on Outstanding Business and Economic Reporting in a Regularly Scheduled Newscast for the coverage of GM being blamed for deaths due to faulty switches.

The network received two Emmy nominations for Outstanding Live Coverage of a Current News Story – Long Form; the first nom was for their coverage of the NYC chokehold protests, reported by correspondent/anchors Brooke Baldwin, Jason Carroll, Chris Cuomo, Deborah Feyerick, Alexandra Field, Athena Jones, Kyung Lah, and Anderson Cooper. They received a second nom for their coverage of the Ukrainian crisis, with reports from Phil Black and Nick Paton Walsh, and anchored by Rosemary Church, Wolf Blitzer, and Poppy Harlow.

CNN Films received two Emmy noms: one for Outstanding Business and Economic Reporting – Long Form for Ivory Tower; and one for Outstanding Science and Technology Programming with Dinosaur 13.

They got an Emmy nom for Outstanding Editing: Documentary and Long Form for the sixth episode of season one of The Hunt; and a nom for Outstanding Graphic Design & Art Direction the digital series The City of Tomorrow.

Their sister channel, CNN en Español, also picked up a few Emmys. For Outstanding Newscast or News Magazine in Spanish, CNNE picked up two noms: Directo USA anchored by Juan Carlos López and Nuestro Mundo, anchored by Patricia Janiot. For Outstanding Coverage of a Breaking News Story in Spanish, they received a nom forŸ Venezuela Crisis, reported by Osmary Hernandez, Adriana Hauser, anchors Fernando del Rincón, Patricia Janiot, Carlos Montero, Patricia Ramos.


Karl Penhaul goes on bizarre Twitter rant about Donald Trump

Karl Penhaul, a freelance international correspondent for CNN and CNN en Español, went on a bizarre Twitter rant a short time ago about GOP presidential hopeful Donald Trump. He was offering kudos to Univision for dumping Trump and canceling the broadcast of the Miss USA pageant following Trump’s offensive comments about Mexicans.

As a side note, Penhaul has freelanced on and off for Univision News, as well.

Docufilms comes to CNNE

A new documentary series is coming to CNN en Español, entitled Docufilms, and it will premiere Sunday, June 21.

CNN en Español, the leading Spanish-language news channel, will start an interesting and reveling documentary series next Sunday, June 21 at 7 PM (EST) with argentine singer, songwriter, composer, actor, and the most prominent figure in the history of tango; “Carlos Gardel.”

Docufilms will include distinguished and inspiring stories that will capture the audience’s interest through a variety of profiles, biographies, art and uplifting historical documentaries. The first one, “Carlos Gardel” will reveal the life of the legendary Carlos Gardel.

The second, entitled “A Journey with Fidel,” this is an original documentary which include the story narrated and released by a young journalist from New York, Jon Alpert, who had the exclusivity to accompany Fidel Castro on his plane to the United Nations Conference in 1979 having an unique and privileged access to Fidel never seen before.

Other documentaries that will be part of the series include; “The 33”, about the rescue of the Chilean miners occurred in October 2010; “Neruda Passionate” with the biography of a man who fought against all odds to become a poet and overcame obstacles until been recognized with The Nobel Prize in Literature 1971; and “Oscar de la Renta,” whose name is synonymous of elegance, glamour and sophistication. This will show how his name is translated into a successful brand, associated with fragrances, leather and household items.

The new series of CNN in Spanish, Docufilms will premiere on Sunday June 21 at 7:00 pm (Atlanta) with “Carlos Gardel.”


Diego Laje to Argentina

After serving eight years as the network’s Asia-Pacific correspondent, Diego Laje will be moving to Buenos Aires, Argentina, where he will serve as CNNE’s correspondent and will be in charge of their bureau.

Laje’s promotion was announced on CNN Dinero with host Rafael Romo.

Nacido en Argentina, Laje tendrá a su cargo al equipo de producción de Buenos Aires, y de la cobertura de la cadena en todos los países de la región. Laje servirá de puente entre el Cono Sur y la sede mundial de CNN en Atlanta, y velará por que los grandes temas de la agenda de ese territorio tengan presencia en la programación diaria de CNN en Español. Previo a este nombramiento, Laje se desempeñó durante ocho años como corresponsal de la cadena en Asia, con sede en Hong Kong.

Desde 2007, Laje ha estado a cargo del programa especial Enfoque Asia, y ha cubierto para CNN en Español algunos de los eventos más resaltantes de la región, tales como: el terremoto en Sichuan, elTsunami de Japón y crisis de la planta de Fukushima, el tifón de Haiyan, la desaparición del vuelo MH370 desde Malasia y Beijín, y el siniestro del vuelo MH17 en Ucrania y la guerra civil en ese país, entre otros. Más recientemente, Laje cubrió desde Katmandú la devastación dejada por el terremoto de Nepal.

Previo a su llegada a CNN en Español, Laje fue corresponsal económico en Hong Kong para la cadena japonesa NHK World, y talento de CCTV, televisión central de China, en español, inglés y chino mandarín. Fue también gerente para Asia de la curtiembre Arlei de Argentina, la quinta curtiembre más grande del mundo, y analista accionario y de fusiones y adquisiciones en Bloomberg. Laje es licenciado en Ciencia Política de la Universidad de San Andrés de Argentina, es máster el periodismo de la Universidad de Hong Kong, y tiene un posgrado en derecho comparado de la Universidad de Oxford.

Fernando del Rincón rejoins CNNE

The CNN en Español primetime anchor Fernando del Rincón wasn’t off the airwaves for more than a month before returning.

In a statement to HuffPo, CNN spokesperson Isabel Bucaram said about a month ago:

“CNN en Español and Fernando del Rincón were unable to reach an agreement to renew his contract for which del Rincón will be leaving the network. CNNE thanks him for his years of service and wishes him the best.”


Flash forward, and here we are, with him rejoining CNN en Español.

In another statement to HuffPo, Isabel Bucaram said:

“CNN en Español confirms that it managed to reach a new agreement with Fernando del Rincón. del Rincón returns to the air…Monday, October 20th.”

Glenda Umaña cut at CNNEE

As part of the Turner 2020 cuts, CNN en Español morning anchor Glenda Umaña of Café CNÑ has been laid off.

In part, Glenda wrote, “I can confirm that my job at CNN has been impacted by the [Turner 2020 cuts].”

Her full statement in Spanish is below:

Her Café CNÑ co-anchor, Alejandra Oraa, sent out a good-bye note to Glenda. In part, she said, “… it will always be an honor to call you friend.”

Her other co-anchor, Carlos Montero, tweeted as well, saying in part, “It was an honor to work with [you].”
