CNN turned 40 years old on Monday. “Now here’s the news” was how Lois Hart kicked off CNN’s first news broadcast, the network notes. “We’re going to have all kinds of news, sports, weather and special features, coming from now on and forever,” Hart said at the conclusion of the 1st hour of news.
CNN Founder Ted Turner wrote, “Happy 40th Anniversary, CNN. Forty years later and you’re still my greatest achievement.”
To celebrate the 40th anniversary, CNN employees received a sweatshirt (below) and a note on a CNN letterhead. It read: “Surely Ted couldn’t have predicted that CNN, on its 40th anniversary, would face some of the greatest challenges to its coverage in history. But his confidence in this organization’s relentless pursuit of the story and unwavering dedication to inform the world still rings true. Today, in the most confusing times, most people around the globe tune to CNN than any other outlet for answers, news, and information.”
It ended with: “The world needs journalists. The world needs CNN. And now, more than ever, the world needs you.”
