CNN cut London programming, encourages some staffers to re-apply for jobs

As CNN USA nears its first month broadcasting out of its new headquarters in Hudson Yards, news has come to CNN Commentary that the network’s international arm is effectively ending its TV output from London. The reduction is slated to cut at least 90 minutes of programming from London, with simulcasts of CNN USA to air for now.

A source with knowledge of the abrupt shift told us that in many instances, employees have been encouraged to re-apply for their positions.

CNN International has some of its flagship programs in London, including Amanpour. and Hala Gorani Tonight, both anchored by veteran anchors Christiane Amanpour and Hala Gorani.

This news comes on the heels of CNN buying out 100 employees, including CNNI’s chief Tony Maddox, who announced he was leaving after 21 years.

At the time of the reported buyouts and impending layoffs, CNN vehemently denied the report. Vice president Allison Gollust said, “There are no mass layoffs at CNN. I have no idea where that crazy rumor came from.” Since that statement, the network has laid off its Health reporting unit and has now relocated its London programming and displaced many staffers.

A request for comment from CNN was not immediately returned.

It looks to me that CNN (CNN’s new parent company) is cutting off its nose to spite its face. I can see reasons to make cuts on expenses, but when you start cutting off one of the biggest broadcasting sites outside of U.S., you are sending signals of not only restructuring, but also of warning to some key reporters: move to where we send you or lose your job. I get a feeling that CNN is going to start bleeding some of its most elite reporters in the near future…which is truly unfortunate and will eventually cost them more than keeping them happy.

I can see the value in broadcasting CNN International from New York. As one of the world’s largest, wealthiest cities, it does make sense. However, I don’t think it should be at the expense of the London studio. I’d be disappointed if they add extra US simulcasts though – the strength of CNNI is in it’s international reporting. Despite falling ratings in the US, CNN International is very profitable. It is not CNNI struggling, but CNNUS. CNN should be strengthening it’s international operation, not cutting it back.

We need MORE programs from CNNi, not less!!! They have a cadre of experienced & professional journalists, unlike the BREAKING NEWS sensationalists that CNN USA currently employs.

  4. CNN is not interested in the news anymore it is only interested in Donald Trump and CNNi doesn’t do Donald Trump it has to look for real news and that costs money with reporters in the warzones, Donald Trump news is cheap 6 idiots sitting around a desk yapping away about what Donald had for breakfast.
