CNN’s Cooper-Cohen-led NYE coverage comes in first place

The Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen-led broadcast of CNN’s New Year’s Eve coverage paid off, placing them in first place over Fox News. The Cooper-Kathy Griffin show regularly rated well, but this is the first year the show has been without Griffin (since the network fired her).

The main show snagged the two top spots among adults 18-49 with 0.7 and 0.6 ratings, with the 8 p.m.-12:30 a.m. marathon averaging 2.23 million, reports TV by the Numbers.

The part of the show hosted by Don Lemon and Brooke Baldwin, at 12:30 a.m., drew 2.34 million viewers.

  1. So without Ms. Griffith, CNN beat FNC in both the demo and total viewers at 11p.

But they did that last NYE.

Where they did even better was also beating FNC in total viewers at 9p and 10p — something they didn’t do last NYE when CNN only won the demo.

At 11p — the most popular hour before the ball drops — CNN was up 8% and FNC was down 10%.

I think many of us know that when FNC strays too far from politically-based or global conflict news stories to cover natural disasters, mass shootings and entertainment-based shows it’s almost always a ratings challenge.

That’s just not who they are…and they never claimed to be.
