CNN announced late last week that it had canceled Believer, the show hosted by scholar and commentator Reza Aslan that had aired on CNN for one season, after Aslan came under fire for a tweet about President Trump.
Aslan tweeted: “This piece of sh*t is not just an embarrassment to America and a stain on the presidency. He’s an embarrassment to humankind.”
At the time, CNN released a statement clarifying that he was not a CNN employee, but that they had an agreement with the production company behind Believer.
He apologized the next day, “I lost my cool and responded to him in a derogatory fashion. That’s not like me. I should have used better language to express my shock and frustration at the president’s lack of decorum and sympathy for the victims of London. I apologize for my choice of words.”
When CNN announced Friday it was parting ways with Aslan, he said, “Obviously I am very disappointed in this decision” but acknowledging that CNN “needs to protect its brand.”
