The Istanbul Bakırkoy Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation into CNN Türk for using the phrase “dictator on trial” in reference to a story concerning discord between President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) leader Kemal Kilicdaroglu.
They aired the on-screen graphic during their program when reporting on an investigation into Kilicdaroglu in late January for calling the president a “tinpot dictator.”
Idris Kurt, from the prosecutor’s office, filed the complaint against the CNN affiliate, seeking compensation for “insulting the president” through its choice of wording on the chyron.
CNN Türk’s news director and the responsible manager are expected to be summoned to court to give their testimony.
