Appearing on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert on CBS, Christiane Amanpour, during a trip to New York (from her normal office in London), she talked about how she was an “accidental” journalist.
“Just after the revolution in Iran, we didn’t have any money and we didn’t know what to do — in any event, my parents were stuck there, we were in England, and my sister decided to sign herself up to a journalism college in London. Well, sadly after a couple of months, she decided this was not for her. So I went back and I said, ‘Can I have our money back, please’ because we just could not afford to throw it away, and they said, ‘No,’ so I said, ‘Can I take this course instead?'”
Matter-of-factly, she concluded, “And that’s what I did, and that’s how I became a journalist.”
Amanpour later added, “And joined CNN, and scrambled my way up.”
She proceeded to report on Colbert’s staff, as well as report on herself later on.
