Don Lemon, for once the voice of reason, blasted on Twitter

Don Lemon has a rather remarkable history of causing controversy, both on Twitter and through his commentary and reporting for CNN.

Today was no exception — though, perhaps Lemon was the only one who was willing to wait for more facts to come out before jumping to conclusions.

Offering his take on the Spring Valley High School student who appears to be pushed down rather aggressively by a school resource officer, Lemon got into a fierce debate with CNN legal analyst Sunny Hostin, appearing on Wolf Blitzer’s The Situation Room.

In a clip that Lemon’s CNN Tonight account tweeted (and has since deleted), Lemon said reasonably, “It does look disturbing — the part that is most disturbing to me is seeing her thrown around. As far as the desk going over, I don’t know if the desk fell over because she didn’t want to get up, or if he pushed over, I don’t know, so I think there’s context to everything, I would like to see what happens before and I would like to see what happened afterwards… [But] it does look horrible, it does look like there’s no excuse for what he’s doing for her, [but] we don’t know… It only shows a small slice in time of what happened.”

Hostin was outraged. “Are you guys kidding me?”

“No, we’re not kidding – we don’t know what happened. You weren’t sitting in the room, Sunny…”

“I don’t need to know more!” Hostin insisted.

Spring Valley High resource officer Ben Fields has been placed on administrative duty while the investigation takes place.

Twitter was furious with Lemon’s, for once, reasonable reaction: yes, it looks bad, but let’s wait for some additional facts. And so the trolls pounced on him:

  1. When Don Lemon is right on the mark the bleeding heart anarchists come out of the woodwork and from under the rocks to defend a person who disrupted the other students’ right to a peaceful education, who completely disrespected the teacher and who refused to obey a lawful order given by a duly appointed law official. I’m not ready to let kids in school take over the country. Wait until they can vote. Wait until they’re willing to lay their lives down for the country they seem to hate so much.

    Good for you, Don Lemon.
