CNN returns to airing Forensic Files overnights, cuts back Early Start

The overnight block, anchored by the team of John Vause and Zain Asher from 12-2am, followed by Errol Barnett and Rosemary Church from 2-4am, that simulcasts on CNN Domestic, has been partially slashed.

Now, the first block of Newsroom, anchored by the duo of Vause and Asher, will simulcast on CNN Domestic. However, the second block, anchored by Barnett and Church, has been replaced with Forensic Files re-runs, according to CNNgo.

In addition, Early Start has returned to one hour, now airing from 5-6am (instead of 4-6am).

This is a confusing change, because in February, Zucker was touting the fact CNN had increased its live news programming: “We’ve added in the last year, five hours of additional news by doing news from 12 midnight to 5 a.m., so there’s more news on the network, so that has helped. We are basically doing live news 22 out of 24 hours a day.”

When I asked a source on the simulcast block, the response I received was that they “don’t know what the deal is,” referring to the simulcast cut-back.

A rep for CNN didn’t return a request for comment.

  1. I reside in Canada, and I’m not happy about this. I enjoyed the Newsroom which aired from 9 p.m. to 1 a.m. (PDT), and I enjoyed the two-hour block of early start. Forensic Files is good for the evening (though it’s all very old re-runs), but nothing beats round the clock news.
