How Mike Rowe came to use his parents

Following a very strong debut of season two of Somebody’s Gotta Do It, with Mike Rowe coming within one thousand viewers of Megyn Kelly, the CNN host spoke with TVNewser about the trailers featuring his parents.

“So, the challenge for season two of Somebody’s Gotta Do It, is to promote not just the fact that the show’s coming back, but the fact that I’m actually on CNN, which is obvious to everybody within earshot of me right now, but not to the rest of the country. It’s hard to get that message out, so this year, they said, ‘How do you want to do it?’ and I said, ‘Honestly, I just had the funniest moment… I was visiting my folks at home, and I was talking to my mother about my new show on CNN, and my dad was watching television from the sofa, yelling questions back, like ‘I went on Wednesday night… You said you’d be on Wednesday night. You weren’t there!’

I’m like, ‘Yeah, I know, Dad, we got preempted… It was a thing.’

‘Yeah, but I went there…and you weren’t there, and you said you were gonna be there!’

I’m like, ‘I get it, but CNN has a prime directive, and that’s to report the news.’

He goes, ‘Michael, all I’m saying, is when you tell somebody you’re gonna be some place, at a specific time, you ought to be there!’

So I explained all of this to the promo people at CNN, and they were like ‘that’s funny, we should just do that,’ so we went to my mom and dad’s house, and spent the day shooting… But there were no scripts. We basically just reenacted dozens of conversations that I’ve actually had with them. It’s real. And we just thought, well, look, you’re doing a show about real people doing real things… why not let your parents promote it in a real way? That’s how that happened.”
